Best free bank account in Belgium (2026)
Updated · figures checked 2 November 2026
The short version
- If you live in Belgium and bank online, Keytrade Bank offers a free account, a free debit card, and a passport is enough for non-Belgian residents who live in Belgium. It takes no cash deposits and has no branches.
- If you need a free Belgian IBAN in your first days, bunq is the app that states it gives one to people signing up from Belgium.
- Hello bank!, Beobank and Belfius are free but their online route needs a Belgian identity card or itsme, so they fit after your commune registration.
- Free accounts save money through limits: capped cash withdrawals, a paid physical card, a single free holder or an activity condition. Read the conditions column before you choose.
Not rated: Revolutad. Their official pages could not be read when we checked, so we do not score them rather than guess.

A current account in Belgium does not have to cost anything. Several Belgian banks and app-based providers now list a free everyday account, and for most newcomers that covers what they need: a salary paid in, rent and bills paid out, a debit card and an app.
The catch is that “free” means different things. One account is free with two debit cards but only a set number of cash withdrawals a year. Another is free for the main holder but charges a partner on a joint account. A third is free only while you use it actively, or charges for the plastic card. And some free accounts are closed to you until you hold a Belgian identity card, which takes weeks after you arrive.
This guide compares nine free accounts on the monthly fee, the conditions to stay free, the debit card, free cash withdrawals, whether you get a Belgian IBAN and who can open the account. It is written for expats who want to keep banking costs at zero without getting stuck at the opening stage. For a wider look at Belgian banks, including paid accounts with English service and opening from abroad, see our guide to the best bank for expats in Belgium.
How to choose a free bank account in Belgium
Read the conditions to stay free
The monthly fee column only tells half the story. The column “Conditions to stay free” shows what each provider attaches to the zero: a single holder, active use, or nothing stated. Joint accounts are a common trap for couples who move together: at Beobank, for example, only the main holder is free.
Look at the extras that are not part of the free package. Argenta charges paper transfers, extra debit cards and counter withdrawals. Beobank charges instant transfers made in a branch. N26 charges for a physical card on its free plan, and Wise charges a one-off fee for its card. None of these is large, but if you know you will use them, factor them in.
Cash withdrawals
Most free accounts limit free cash withdrawals. Belfius includes a yearly allowance, Beobank includes a yearly allowance at other banks’ machines (its own are not counted against it), N26 a small monthly allowance and Wise a monthly amount. Argenta includes euro withdrawals at its own and other banks’ machines. If you pay a babysitter, a cleaner or market traders in cash, a low allowance will cost you more than a small monthly fee elsewhere.
Belgian IBAN or not
A free account with a foreign IBAN is legal to use for your salary inside the EU, but some Belgian employers and landlords still ask for a Belgian one. bunq states it gives a BE IBAN to people who sign up from Belgium, and Wise’s euro account details show one. N26 gives a German IBAN. The Belgian banks in this guide did not state the IBAN country on the pages we read, but an account at a Belgian bank normally carries one; confirm it when you open.
Who can open it
This is the column that matters most in your first weeks. Keytrade Bank accepts a passport from non-Belgian residents. bunq, N26, Wise and Vivid open in an app with a foreign ID. Hello bank! and Beobank’s online route need a Belgian identity card. Belfius onboards online through its app and itsme. Argenta asks you to fill in a contact form and choose a branch. Our bank finder shows the requirements of each bank with their sources, so you can filter on the documents you have today.
The basic banking service
If no bank will open an account for you, the law gives you a fallback. The basic banking service, a legal right for EU residents, costs at most €20.34 per year in 2026 and includes unlimited electronic operations and 36 manual operations. (source, checked 2 November 2026) A bank can refuse it only on narrow grounds set out by Wikifin, the FSMA’s financial education site (checked 2 November 2026), and it cannot ask for proof of income or a guarantor. At one bank in this guide, it costs nothing: Keytrade Bank provides the basic banking service free of charge. (source, checked 2 November 2026) The FPS Economy page on the basic banking service was behind a bot check when we tried to read it, so check the current conditions on the FPS Economy page.
The providers compared
The order follows the scores in the table. Every figure links to the page we read on 2 November 2026.
1. Keytrade Bank 6.7/10
Ranked 1 of 9 rated providers in this guide.
Best for: Online-savvy residents, including non-Belgians with a passport.
Keytrade Bank is the Belgian branch of Arkéa Direct Bank, a French bank in the Crédit Mutuel Arkéa group. It works online only: website, app, phone and email, with appointments possible at its Brussels office.
The account costs €0, with conditions to stay free: None for account. The debit card is Free, and Keytrade’s credit cards are also free if you use them regularly. Its KEYpack pays a small cashback on card transactions. Two values were not on the pages we read: free cash withdrawals (not publishedad) and the IBAN country (not publishedad). Ask about both before you move your salary.
For a newcomer the strength is the opening rule: Residents, passport OK. You must be a Belgian citizen, live in Belgium or be tax resident in Belgium, and you identify with a passport if you are not Belgian. You can apply with or without itsme; without it you print, sign and return the contract. A Belgian mobile number is needed to activate cards remotely.
The limits: no cash deposits at all, and no branches. It suits salaried residents who are paid by transfer and are comfortable with online banking. It does not suit people who handle cash.

2. bunq 6.4/10
Ranked 2 of 9 rated providers in this guide.
Best for: Newcomers needing a BE IBAN fast.
bunq is a Dutch bank working across the EU. Its free plan is €0 (bunq Free) and it comes with a Digital card from the moment you open. The important line for newcomers: Yes (BE) for Belgian residents. Few app accounts give you that.
Opening is quick: ID + video check. You download the app, film a short identity check with your ID document and the IBAN is ready straight away. There is no Belgian card requirement on the pages we read.
What we could not confirm is the fine print of the free plan. The conditions to stay free were not publishedad, and so were free cash withdrawals: not publishedad. The cost of a physical card on the free plan was not stated either. Read the plan details in the app before you rely on bunq for cash.
Deposits are covered by the Dutch deposit guarantee scheme, not the Belgian one, which is normal for an EU bank. Support runs through the app; we did not collect phone details.
bunq suits newcomers who need a free Belgian IBAN fast, for a salary or a rent direct debit. It suits less well anyone who wants a branch or relies on cash.

3. Hello bank! 6.3/10
Ranked 3 of 9 rated providers in this guide.
Best for: Registered residents who want a free app account.
Hello bank! is the mobile brand of BNP Paribas Fortis, so the account is held by one of the large Belgian banks. The monthly fee is €0/month, the conditions are None stated for fee, the debit card is Free and on cash and payments the page says Euro transactions free (EEA). Apple Pay, Google Pay and Garmin Pay cost nothing. It is the most complete free account in this guide on paper.
The obstacle is eligibility: Belgian ID card. You must be at least 18 and have your main residence in Belgium. Its FAQ also says American nationals cannot become customers because of FATCA, the US tax reporting law. The IBAN country was not publishedad on the pages we read.
The website is in English; we could not confirm the app or support language. Contact runs through the Hello Team, and there are no Hello bank! branches.
It suits residents who already have their Belgian identity card and want a free, app-based account from a Belgian bank. It is not available in your first weeks, and never for US citizens.

4. Beobank 6.1/10
Ranked 4 of 9 rated providers in this guide.
Best for: Registered residents with a Belgian eID.
Beobank is a Belgian bank in the French Crédit Mutuel group, with branches. Its Compte GO costs €0 for the main holder (Compte GO). The condition: Main holder only. Co-holders and extra cards are charged monthly, so a couple sharing one account pays something. Debit card: 1 included. Electronic euro transactions are unlimited, and free cash withdrawals are 24/year outside Beobank. Instant transfers are free online but charged in a branch.
Opening online needs a Belgian eID needed and itsme, plus a mobile number and email. You can also go to a branch, but we found no published conditions for foreign documents there. The IBAN country was not publishedad on the pages we read.
The website has an English version, but the product pages we read were in French. Apple Pay and Payconiq work with the account. Beobank also runs a free youth account, JUMP, for younger clients.
It suits single residents with a Belgian identity card who want a free account and a branch to visit. It suits couples less well because of the co-holder fee.

5. N26 5.9/10
Ranked 5 of 9 rated providers in this guide.
Best for: English-speaking newcomers fine with a DE IBAN.
N26 is a German bank with an English-language app. The Standard plan is €0 (Standard). What you pay for is the plastic: the debit card is Virtual free, physical €10, and on conditions to stay free the plans page gives: None stated; physical card €10. Free cash withdrawals are 2/month.
For Belgium the main drawback is the IBAN: No (DE IBAN). That is legal across the EU, but you may meet the odd employer or landlord who asks for a Belgian one.
Opening is in the app: Resident + photo ID. You need to be at least 18, live in Belgium (a supported country), have a compatible smartphone and give a valid address in Belgium. Identity verification is available in English, German, Spanish, Italian and French, which helps if you do not read French or Dutch.
It suits English-speaking newcomers who want a free app account for daily spending and do not mind a German IBAN. If you need a Belgian IBAN, bunq or a Belgian bank fits better.

6. Wise 5.9/10
Ranked 6 of 9 rated providers in this guide.
Best for: Multi-currency earners.
Wise is a multi-currency account and transfer service run in Europe by Wise Europe SA in Brussels. It is not a bank, and we could not confirm its licence on an official register because the NBB list was unreadable on the day we checked. It is not covered by a deposit guarantee scheme.
There is €0, no subscription; the condition is simply No monthly fee. The card costs €7 once. Free cash withdrawals are capped at €250/month, with a charge above that. The IBAN country for Belgian residents: Not statedad. Wise’s help page shows a sample of euro account details with a BE IBAN, but does not say which residents get one.
Opening: Passport/ID. Residents of Europe can use the photo page of a passport or a national ID card, but not a driving licence.
Wise suits people who earn or spend in several currencies and want cheap conversion. As your only free account it is weaker: it is not a bank, and it cannot hold a rental guarantee.

7. Argenta 5.1/10
Ranked 7 of 9 rated providers in this guide.
Best for: Dutch/French speakers wanting a free branch-backed account.
Argenta is a Belgian savings bank with branches. On product alone its Green-pakket is the strongest free account in this guide: €0 (Green-pakket), conditions to stay free: None stated. Debit cards: 2 included. Cash withdrawals: Included (euro, SEPA), at Argenta’s machines and other banks’. Argenta's Green-pakket costs €0 a month and includes 2 debit cards (fee document dated 1 April 2026). (source, checked 2 November 2026) Opening and closing are free too. Paper transfers, an extra debit card and counter withdrawals are charged.
Its weak point is access. The website is in Dutch and French only and the fee documents are in Dutch. To become a client you fill in a contact form, choose a branch and wait to be contacted. Argenta does not publish who can open an account (not publishedad) or the IBAN country (not publishedad) on the pages we read.
It suits Dutch or French speakers who are settled in Belgium, want two free cards and use cash machines often. If you need English, look higher in the list.

8. Belfius 4.9/10
Ranked 8 of 9 rated providers in this guide.
Best for: Residents with itsme who rarely withdraw cash.
Belfius is a large Belgian bank with branches and a phone service, Belfius Direct. Its Beats Pulse account is €0 (Beats Pulse, listed as 'gratuit'), for an Individual holder; accounts not held by individuals pay a monthly supplement. Debit cards: 2 included. Free euro cash withdrawals: 24/year. Mobile and online banking are part of the package. Electronic euro payments and transfers are included.
The limits are language and access. The retail pages and the tariff brochure we read were in French, and we found no English retail page. Online, Belfius onboards through its app and itsme. It does not publish who can open an account (not publishedad) or the IBAN country (not publishedad) on the pages we read. Belfius has already published a tariff for 1 January 2027, so check whether Beats Pulse stays free.

9. Vivid Money 4.8/10
Ranked 9 of 9 rated providers in this guide.
Best for: App users wanting budgeting pockets.
Vivid Money is a payment account app run by Vivid Money S.A. in Luxembourg, which says it is regulated by the CSSF, Luxembourg’s financial regulator. It is not a bank, and we could not confirm its licence on an official register.
Its free plan comes with a condition: €0 for active customers, otherwise €4.90. The free condition is listed as Active customer, and Vivid does not define “active” on the page we read. If you open the account as a backup and leave it idle, you may end up paying. The card is a Virtual card; free cash withdrawals were not publishedad, and so was the IBAN country for Belgian customers (not publishedad).
Opening: App + ID, with identity verification that does not need a video call. Vivid’s appeal is its many sub-accounts with their own IBANs and its range of currencies.
It suits app users who want budgeting pockets and will use the account every month. It is the weakest choice for a free account you only use now and then.

| Service (20%) | 3/10 | Support not collected. |
| Simplicity (10%) | 8/10 | App application without video call. |
| Digital (5%) | 8/10 | Many IBAN pockets and 22 currencies. |
Revolut’s free plan is not in this comparison: its Belgian pricing page refused our access when we checked, so we have no verified data on it. Read Revolut’s sitead yourself if you consider it, and check the IBAN country and the licence. BNP Paribas Fortis’s own pages also returned a server error; its free app brand Hello bank! is rated above.
If you do not have a Belgian identity card yet
Your free options are the ones that accept a foreign ID. bunq and N26 open in the app with your ID document; N26 also wants a Belgian address. Wise accepts a passport or national ID card. Keytrade Bank accepts a passport once you live in Belgium. Hello bank!, Beobank (online) and Belfius (app and itsme) are realistic only once your commune registration is done and your card has arrived. Most newcomers start with an app account and add a Belgian bank later.
If you are under 25 or 26
Several banks that are not free for adults have free accounts for young people, and some are worth knowing about if you are a student or a young professional:
- KBC Brussels Young Person's Account is free for under-25s. (source, checked 2 November 2026)
- ING Go is €0 for clients aged 18-25 (otherwise €2.20/month). (source, checked 2 November 2026)
- Crelan Essential Pack is €0/month for under-25s (€4.50 otherwise). (source, checked 2 November 2026)
- Beobank Compte JUMP is free for ages 10 to 26 inclusive. (source, checked 2 November 2026)
Check what happens on your birthday: these accounts usually switch to the paying version once you pass the age limit.
If you handle cash
Free accounts are designed for card and app payments. Keytrade Bank takes no cash deposits at all. Belfius and Beobank cap free withdrawals at other banks’ machines in a year, N26 per month, Wise by amount. If you deposit or withdraw cash often, Argenta’s Green-pakket, with euro withdrawals at any bank’s machine included, or a paying account at a bank with branches will serve you better.
If you are a couple
Joint accounts change the price at some banks. Beobank’s Compte GO is free for the main holder only, and co-holders pay a monthly fee. Hello bank! allows a joint account. Argenta’s Green-pakket includes two debit cards in the free package, which suits two people sharing one account. Before you open, ask what a second holder and a second card cost.
Step by step: opening a free account
- List what you hold. Passport only, a Belgian address, a Belgian identity card, itsme. Use the bank finder to match banks to your documents.
- Pick on the conditions, not only the fee. Check withdrawals, card cost, joint-holder fees and any activity rule.
- Get a Belgian mobile number. Keytrade Bank needs one to activate cards, and most apps send security codes by SMS.
- Open online or in the app. Expect a passport or ID photo and a selfie or short video. Without itsme, Keytrade Bank asks you to post a signed contract.
- Check the IBAN. If you need a BE IBAN for your employer or landlord, confirm the country code before you share it.
- If you are refused everywhere, ask any bank in writing for the basic banking service and complain to Ombudsfin if it is refused without a valid reason.
Our verdict
Keytrade Bank comes out ahead in the table, but the right account depends on your situation. If you live in Belgium and bank online, Keytrade Bank fits best: free account and cards, and a passport is enough. bunq is the best free option for your first days thanks to its Belgian IBAN. Hello bank! is the most complete free account once you hold a Belgian identity card. Beobank suits single residents with a Belgian card, and N26 suits English speakers who accept a German IBAN. Wise is a free companion account for multi-currency money. Argenta has the best free package on paper but is hard to open without Dutch or French, Belfius suits itsme users who rarely use cash, and Vivid is free only if you use it actively.
