Best neobank in Belgium (2026)
Updated · figures checked 2 November 2026
The short version
- If you need a Belgian IBAN from your phone in your first days, bunq is the app-only bank that states it gives a BE IBAN to people who sign up while living in Belgium.
- Once you live in Belgium, Keytrade Bank offers free accounts and cards, a passport is enough for non-Belgian residents, but it is an online bank with a Belgian branch rather than an app-only start-up.
- Hello bank! is free and Belgian, but it needs a Belgian identity card, so it fits after your commune registration, not before.
- N26 gives a German IBAN, and Wise and Vivid are not banks: check the IBAN country and the protection of your money before you move your salary.

A neobank (an app-only bank or payment account) is often the first account an expat opens in Belgium. You can sign up from your phone, verify your identity with a passport or a video selfie, and have a card in your wallet within minutes. For the weeks when you are still waiting for your commune registration and your Belgian card, that speed counts for a lot.
But not every app is equal for life in Belgium. Some give you a Belgian IBAN (starting BE), some a German or Lithuanian one. Some are full banks covered by a deposit guarantee, others are payment or e-money institutions that are not. And some Belgian “mobile banks” only accept people who already hold a Belgian identity card.
This guide compares six app-based or online accounts available to residents of Belgium on what they publish: the IBAN country, the free plan, the price of paid plans, the physical card, deposit protection and the type of licence. Two well-known apps, Revolut and Trade Republic, could not be rated because their pages were not readable when we checked. If you would rather have a traditional bank with branches, see our guide to the best bank for expats in Belgium.
How to choose a neobank in Belgium
The IBAN country: BE or not?
Your IBAN’s first two letters show the country of the account. bunq states it plainly: bunq gives a BE IBAN to customers who sign up while living in Belgium. (source, checked 2 November 2026) N26 does not: N26 customers in Belgium get a German (DE) IBAN. (source, checked 2 November 2026)
In law, a non-Belgian IBAN should not be a problem inside the EU. Under EU rules, your account may not be refused for SEPA credit transfers or direct debits because it is held in another EU country, if the counterpart accepts those payments from domestic accounts; IBAN discrimination can be reported to the competent authority in the counterpart's country. (source, checked 2 November 2026) In practice, newcomers still meet employers, landlords, utilities and public bodies whose forms only accept a BE IBAN, or whose staff ask for one. If your main reason for opening an account is to receive a Belgian salary or pay Belgian rent by direct debit, a BE IBAN removes that friction. If you mostly need a card for daily spending and currency conversion, the IBAN country matters less.
Bank or payment institution: what protects your money
A licensed bank in the EU belongs to the deposit guarantee scheme of its home country. bunq’s protection is Up to €100,000 (Dutch DGS), and N26’s is Up to €100,000. bunq’s guarantee is Dutch and N26’s is German, not Belgian. That is normal for a bank passporting its licence across the EU, but it means a claim would go through the home scheme.
A payment institution or e-money institution is not a bank. It is not covered by a deposit guarantee scheme; under EU rules it must instead keep customers’ money separate from its own. In this guide Wise’s licence is not publishedad on the pages we read, and Vivid says of itself that it is Not a bank (per Vivid). Neither is a problem for a spending account, but think twice before parking large savings there. You can check any firm in the EBA Payment Institutions Register and the ECB list of supervised banks. The National Bank of Belgium lists were unreadable on the day we checked, so we relied on the ECB list for the banks here.
What you need to sign up
App accounts are popular with newcomers because most accept a passport. Wise accepts a passport or a national ID card from residents of Europe, but not a driving licence. N26 asks for a valid photo ID and a valid address in Belgium. bunq runs a quick video check with your ID. Vivid verifies identity without a video call. Keytrade Bank accepts a passport from non-Belgian residents, but you must live in Belgium or be tax resident there. Hello bank! asks for a Belgian identity card. Our bank finder puts these requirements side by side with their sources.
Free plans and their limits
Most neobanks have a free tier and sell paid plans with more cash withdrawals, insurance or metal cards. Read what the free tier leaves out: a physical card may cost extra, free withdrawals may be capped, and some free plans are free only if you use the account actively. The table shows the free plan, the cheapest paid plan and the physical card for each.
Cash
App-only accounts are weak on cash. You can withdraw at machines within each provider’s allowance, but depositing cash is rarely possible. Keytrade Bank says outright that cash deposits are not possible. If you are paid partly in cash or run a small business that takes cash, pair your neobank with a traditional bank.
The providers compared
The order follows the scores in the table. Every figure links to the page we read on 2 November 2026.
1. Keytrade Bank 6.7/10
Ranked 1 of 6 rated providers in this guide.
Best for: Residents who want a free online bank that accepts a passport.
Keytrade Bank is not a start-up neobank. It is the Belgian branch of Arkéa Direct Bank, a French bank in the Crédit Mutuel Arkéa group, and it works as an online bank without branches. Its strengths are the online model combined with a Belgian presence and a very low price.
Its accounts are €0, and the card is a Free debit card. Credit cards are free with regular use, and the KEYpack pays a small cashback per card transaction. There are no paid plans to compare: not publishedad. Keytrade did not state the IBAN country on the pages we read, not publishedad, which is surprising for a Belgian branch; confirm it before you sign. Deposit protection was also not publishedad on the pages we read.
For a newcomer, Keytrade accepts a passport from non-Belgian residents, and you can apply online with or without itsme. Without itsme you print, sign and post the contract, so it is slower than a pure app. You need to live in Belgium or be tax resident there, and a Belgian mobile number to activate cards remotely.
Service is by phone and email, with appointments at its Brussels office. No cash deposits, no branches. It suits residents who want a free everyday account and are fine with an online bank. It is not the fastest option for your first day.

2. bunq 6.4/10
Ranked 2 of 6 rated providers in this guide.
Best for: Newcomers who need a Belgian IBAN for salary and rent from day one, opened from a phone.
bunq is a Dutch bank, licensed in the Netherlands and supervised under the ECB system. For newcomers to Belgium its main draw is clear: Yes, BE IBAN when you sign up living in Belgium. You download the app, verify your identity in a short video check with your ID document, and get a Belgian IBAN with a digital card straight away.
The free plan is €0, and paid plans start at bunq Core €3.99/month, with a free trial period. bunq did not publish the cost of a physical card on the pages we read: not publishedad. Deposits are protected Up to €100,000 (Dutch DGS). That protection is Dutch, which is normal for an EU bank working in Belgium.
The website and help centre are in English. We could not confirm the language of the contract or of customer support, and bunq does not publish phone support in Belgium that we could find; expect to deal with it in the app.
bunq suits newcomers who need a Belgian IBAN for salary and rent from the first days, without waiting for a Belgian card or a branch appointment. It suits less well people who want a person to call, or who need to deposit cash.

3. Hello bank! 6.3/10
Ranked 3 of 6 rated providers in this guide.
Best for: Residents already registered in Belgium (with a Belgian ID card) who want a free app-based account.
Hello bank! is the mobile brand of BNP Paribas Fortis, one of the large Belgian banks. You use it through an app, without its own branches, but the account is held by a Belgian bank with a Belgian licence.
The account is €0, all euro operations in the EEA are free, and you get a Free debit card. Apple Pay, Google Pay and Garmin Pay are free. There are no paid plans to compare: not publishedad. Hello bank! did not state its IBAN country on the pages we read: not publishedad. Deposit protection was also not stated there: not publishedad.
The obstacle for newcomers is eligibility. Hello bank! requires a Belgian identity card, an age of at least 18 and your main residence in Belgium. Its FAQ also says American nationals cannot become customers because of FATCA, the US tax reporting law. So it is closed to you until your commune has registered you and issued your card, and closed for good if you are a US citizen.
The website is in English, but we could not confirm the app or support language. Contact goes through the Hello Team.
It suits residents already registered in Belgium who want a free, app-based account from a Belgian bank. It is not an option for your first weeks.

4. N26 5.9/10
Ranked 4 of 6 rated providers in this guide.
Best for: Newcomers who want a quick English-language app account and do not need a BE IBAN.
N26 is a German bank, supervised by the German authorities under the ECB system. It is one of the easiest accounts to open in English: verification is available in English, German, Spanish, Italian and French, and the website is in English.
The important point for Belgium: No, German IBAN (DE). That is legal across the EU, but you may meet the occasional employer or landlord who insists on a BE IBAN. The free plan is Standard €0, with a limited number of free euro ATM withdrawals a month. A physical card costs €10 on free plan, while paid plans include it and start at Smart €4.90/month. Deposits are protected Up to €100,000 under the German scheme.
To open, you need to be at least 18, live in a supported country (Belgium is one), have a compatible smartphone, a valid photo ID and a valid address in Belgium. You must not already have an N26 account. So you can open soon after arrival, once you have a Belgian address, even before your Belgian card.
Support channels and hours were not on the pages we collected. N26 suits newcomers who want a quick English-language app account for daily spending and do not need a BE IBAN. If your employer or landlord needs a Belgian IBAN, look at bunq or a Belgian bank instead.

5. Wise 5.9/10
Ranked 5 of 6 rated providers in this guide.
Best for: People paid in several currencies who want cheap conversion and a passport-based sign-up.
Wise is best known for money transfers, but its account also holds balances in many currencies and comes with a debit card. The European business is run by Wise Europe SA, based in Brussels. Wise is not a bank: on the pages we read its licence was not publishedad, and deposit protection was not publishedad. The NBB list of payment and e-money institutions was unreadable on the day we checked, so we could not confirm its licence on an official register.
On IBAN for Belgian residents: Not statedad. Wise’s help page shows a sample of euro account details with a BE IBAN, but does not say which residents get one. The free plan is €0/month and there are no paid plans: not publishedad. The physical card costs €7 one-off. Cash withdrawals are free up to a monthly amount and charged above it, and currency conversion is priced as a percentage from a low starting rate; check Wise’s pricing page for the current figures.
Sign-up is online or in the app. Residents of Europe can verify with a passport photo page or a national ID card; a driving licence is not accepted. We did not find Wise’s address verification rules.
Wise suits people who are paid in or send money in several currencies and want cheap conversion with euro account details. It is a weaker choice as your only account: it is not a bank and it is not covered by a deposit guarantee scheme.

| Digital (5%) | 7/10 | Online and app account; card optional at €7. |
6. Vivid Money 4.8/10
Ranked 6 of 6 rated providers in this guide.
Best for: Users who want multiple IBAN pockets and currencies in one app.
Vivid Money is a payment account app. Its payment services are provided by Vivid Money S.A. in Luxembourg, which Vivid says is regulated by the CSSF, Luxembourg’s financial regulator; investments and crypto run through a separate Dutch company. We could not confirm the licence on an official register. Vivid describes its account as Not a bank (per Vivid), and deposit protection was not publishedad.
Its selling point is flexibility: many sub-accounts with their own IBANs, a long list of currencies, and metal, custom and virtual cards. But Vivid did not say which IBAN country Belgian customers get: not publishedad. The free plan is €0 if active, else €4.90. Vivid does not define “active customer” on the page we read, so read its terms before relying on the free tier. Paid plans start at Vivid Plus €6.90/month. The physical card cost was not publishedad.
Opening happens in the app, with identity verification that does not require a video call. Support channels were not on the pages we collected.
Vivid suits users who want many IBAN pockets and currencies in one app and are comfortable with a payment institution. It is the least suited of the six to be a newcomer’s only account.

| Product quality (40%) | 5/10 | Standard free only for 'active customers' (definition not collected), otherwise €4.90; Plus €6.90; Prime from €7.90. |
| English accessibility (25%) | 4/10 | Website in English; app and support language not confirmed. |
| Service (20%) | 3/10 | Support channels were not collected. |
| Simplicity (10%) | 8/10 | Apply in the app and verify identity without a video call. |
| Digital (5%) | 8/10 | Unlimited IBANs and 22 currencies advertised; metal, custom and virtual cards. |
Two popular apps are not rated. Revolut’s Belgian pricing page and its help article on Belgian IBANs refused our access when we checked, and Trade Republic’s page on its IBAN for Belgian customers returned a “not found” error. We have no verified data on their plans, IBAN or protection, so the table lists them as not rated. If you consider either, read Revolut’s sitead or Trade Republic’s sitead yourself and check the IBAN country and licence before you move your salary.
If you do not have a Belgian card yet
This is where neobanks earn their place. In order of usefulness for the first weeks:
- bunq if you need a BE IBAN quickly. It gives one to people who sign up while living in Belgium and verifies you by video with your ID.
- N26 if a German IBAN is acceptable to you. It needs a valid address in Belgium and a photo ID.
- Wise if you mainly need to receive or convert money in several currencies. It accepts a passport.
- Keytrade Bank once you live in Belgium. It takes a passport but the paper contract route is slower.
Hello bank! is closed to you until you hold a Belgian identity card. Once your commune registration is done and your card arrives, every option in this guide opens up, and you may want to move your salary to a Belgian bank with branches.
If your employer or landlord asks for a Belgian IBAN
Start by pointing out, politely, that refusing an IBAN from another EEA country breaches EU payment rules. The European Commission’s Your Europe page on payments and transfers explains your rights and where to complain. If you do not want the argument, open an account that gives a BE IBAN. Among the rated providers, bunq states it gives one to Belgian residents, and Wise’s help page shows a sample of euro account details with one without saying who gets it; for Keytrade Bank and Hello bank! the IBAN country was not stated on the pages we read.
Rental guarantees are a separate case. A landlord in Belgium often wants the guarantee blocked on an account at a Belgian bank, and a neobank will not usually offer that. See our guide to the best rental guarantee in Belgium.
If you are a US citizen
Hello bank! states that it does not accept American nationals because of FATCA. The other providers in this guide did not publish a nationality restriction on the pages we read, which does not guarantee acceptance. Check each provider’s terms before you start, and keep an account in the US for the first months if you can.
If you are paid in several currencies
If part of your income arrives in dollars, pounds or another currency, conversion cost matters more than the monthly fee. Wise publishes its conversion pricing openly. Vivid advertises many currencies. For transfers abroad, compare services in our guide to the best way to send money abroad from Belgium.
Step by step: opening a neobank account in Belgium
- Choose by IBAN and licence first. Need a BE IBAN: bunq, or a Belgian bank. Need deposit guarantee cover: pick a bank (bunq, N26, Keytrade Bank, Hello bank!), not a payment institution.
- Check what ID you have. Passport only: bunq, N26, Wise, Keytrade Bank (as a resident). Belgian identity card: Hello bank! too.
- Have a Belgian address ready. N26 asks for one; other providers will ask for your address during sign-up.
- Get a Belgian mobile number. Keytrade Bank needs it to activate cards remotely, and a local number makes security codes easier.
- Download the app and verify your identity. Expect a photo of your ID and a selfie or short video.
- Order a physical card if you need one. Some free plans charge for it; check the table.
- Share your IBAN with your employer and set up direct debits. Keep your home account open until your first Belgian salary has arrived.
Our verdict
Keytrade Bank comes out ahead in the table. Keytrade Bank fits if you live in Belgium and want a free online account from a bank with a Belgian branch and a passport-friendly process. bunq is the pick for your first days: a Belgian IBAN from your phone, with Dutch deposit protection. Hello bank! is an excellent free account once you have a Belgian identity card. N26 is quick and fully in English but gives a German IBAN. Wise is the tool for multi-currency money rather than a main account, and Vivid suits users who want many sub-accounts and accept that it is not a bank.
