Best annual travel insurance in Belgium (2026)

Updated · figures checked 2 November 2026

The short version

  • Join a Belgian mutuality first. Without Belgian health insurance, travel plans pay very little for medical costs, and your mutuality may already include assistance abroad.
  • Your European Health Insurance Card is free and useful in Europe, but it is not travel insurance: no private care, no repatriation, no luggage.
  • Want to buy online in English with a price you can see: Redion, formerly Europ Assistance Belgium, the only provider here that publishes annual prices.
  • Families who take long trips in Europe: VAB, with high medical cover and long trips on one family contract. Drivers wanting breakdown and travel cover together: Ethias or Touring.
  • Check the maximum length of a single trip. It varies a lot between plans, and a trip that runs longer is not covered past that limit.

When you live in Belgium, weekends in Paris, summers at home and work trips across Europe quickly add up. An annual travel insurance policy covers every trip in the year for one price, instead of buying cover each time. For a resident it mainly does three things: pays medical costs abroad, brings you home if you are seriously ill or injured, and helps when something goes wrong on the road or with your luggage.

This guide is for expats who have settled in Belgium and want an annual plan. Before buying one, check two things you may already have: your European Health Insurance Card, and the assistance abroad that many Belgian mutualities include for their members. They do not replace travel insurance, but they change what you need to buy.

What decides the choice is the medical limit, the maximum length of a single trip, the area covered, and whether you want car breakdown cover in the same contract. Price is hard to compare, because only one provider in this guide publishes its annual prices.

What you already have

Your European Health Insurance Card

The European Health Insurance Card is free and gives access to state-provided healthcare during temporary stays in the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland and the UK, on the same terms as local insured people. (source, checked 2 November 2026) The EHIC is issued by your national health insurance provider (in Belgium, your mutuality). (source, checked 2 November 2026) Ask your fund for one before your first trip in Europe.

The card has clear limits. The EHIC is not an alternative to travel insurance: it does not cover private healthcare, return flights home or lost or stolen property. (source, checked 2 November 2026) If you need a private clinic in Spain, a medical flight home from Greece, or you lose your bags in Italy, the EHIC pays nothing. That is the gap travel insurance fills. Outside Europe, the card does not apply at all.

Assistance from your mutuality

Mutas provides medical assistance abroad to members of the Christian, socialist (Solidaris), liberal and neutral mutualities and their families. (source, checked 2 November 2026) Helan members use a different service, Mediphone Assist. This assistance is linked to your membership and its limits depend on your fund; we did not read the detailed conditions of each. Mutas is an alarm centre that organises medical help abroad; it does not cover cancellation or your car. Check your fund’s terms before buying a full medical policy, especially if you only travel in Europe.

Why a mutuality matters for travel insurance

Travel plans are designed to sit on top of health insurance. Redion states that if you have no health insurance, its medical cover falls to a small fixed amount. Ethias states that medical costs in Belgium are not covered by its plan. If you are still waiting to join a fund, sort that out first; our guide to the best mutuality for expats explains how.

How to choose annual travel insurance

Annual plan or single trip

An annual plan makes sense once you travel more than once or twice a year, for example if you visit family abroad and also take short trips around Europe. If you take one long holiday a year and nothing else, ask the same providers for a single-trip quote and compare. In both cases, read the conditions for the longest trip you plan, not the average one.

Annual plans are also simpler to manage: one contract, one emergency number, one renewal date. For a household that is still settling in, that matters. Keep the certificate in your e-mail or the provider’s app so you can find it abroad.

The criteria that matter

Medical limit. This is the amount the insurer pays for treatment abroad. Higher limits matter most for destinations with expensive private care. The limits in this guide range widely, and the top formulas are far above the base ones.

Maximum trip length. Annual plans cover many trips, but each trip has a maximum length. That limit varies from short trips only on the cheapest plan to several months on others. If you spend the summer with family abroad, this column matters more than the price.

Area. Some plans cover Europe only, with worldwide cover as an option. Check how the insurer defines Europe: VAB, for example, requires the worldwide option for the Canary Islands, Madeira and the Azores.

Car assistance. Some contracts bundle breakdown and towing for your car with assistance for people. Others sell it separately. If you drive to your holidays, a combined contract avoids two policies.

Cancellation. Cancellation insurance pays when you must cancel a booked trip for a covered reason. It is often a separate product or a bundle, not part of the base annual plan.

Pre-existing conditions. VAB excludes conditions that existed at departure and their expected complications, but covers unexpected complications. Read this clause if you or a family member has an ongoing condition.

Who is covered. Some plans cover the whole household on one contract; others need each person named. VAB asks you to list every family member and report changes.

Language. Redion is the only provider we found with English product pages for travel insurance. The others work in French and Dutch.

Bank cards sometimes include travel insurance. We did not research card cover for this guide, so check your bank’s conditions before paying twice.

The providers compared

1. Redion (formerly Europ Assistance Belgium) 6.2/10

Ranked 1 of 6 rated providers in this guide.

Best for: Residents wanting a cheap annual plan bought online in English.

Redion is the new name of Europ Assistance Belgium; the company says “new name, same care”. The insurer is the Belgian branch of Redion S.A. (France), supervised by the NBB. For a newcomer, two things stand out: English product pages (Yes (redion.be/en)) and published prices.

Price: €66/year (Annual Light, trips under 14 days); Annual Smart €98/year. Medical limit: €250,000 (Light) / up to €1.25M (Smart). The Light plan has a short maximum trip: Under 14 days (Light). If you take longer holidays, look at Smart, which has higher medical limits in Europe and worldwide. Area: Europe and worldwide (Smart); check the area of each formula on the product page.

Cancellation: Up to €2,500/person/trip (as listed). Car assistance: Separate product. Hotel nights are covered if you must stay longer for medical reasons, within a stated ceiling. You can cancel within a short period after buying.

The main warning: without health insurance, Redion’s medical cover falls to a small amount. Join a mutuality before relying on it.

Redion suits residents who want a cheap annual plan they can read and buy online in English, and who mostly take short trips. Families with long summer stays should compare the Smart plan with VAB.

2. VAB 4.8/10

Ranked 2 of 6 rated providers in this guide.

Best for: Families travelling often in Europe for longer trips.

VAB’s annual travel insurance is a collective policy taken out by VAB with KBC Verzekeringen, which carries the risk. VAB is registered with the FSMA as a Belgian insurance agent (non-life insurance). (source, checked 2 November 2026)

Medical limit: €1,000,000 per person, including rescue and search costs. Trip length: 120 days, one of the longest here. Area: Europe; worldwide optional; a trip needs at least one booked night outside Belgium. Car assistance: Optional. Cancellation: Separate / bundle.

The whole family can be on one contract, but every member must be named and you must report household changes. Extra stay costs are paid for a limited number of days if you are delayed by medical reasons, a natural disaster or an airspace closure. Baggage is covered after a deductible. Pre-existing conditions are excluded; unexpected complications are covered.

Price: check current price (product wizard). English: No (English pages cover driving school and B2B only). The product wizard and conditions are in Dutch or French.

VAB suits families who travel often in Europe and take long trips, and who can handle Dutch or French paperwork. Remember the worldwide option if you go to the Canary Islands.

3. Mutas (mutuality travel assistance) 4.5/10

Ranked 3 of 6 rated providers in this guide.

Best for: Members of CM, Solidaris, Liberal or Neutral funds checking what they already have.

Mutas is not an insurer you buy from. It is the alarm centre that gives medical assistance abroad to members of the Christian, socialist (Solidaris), liberal and neutral mutualities and their families on holiday. It uses the International Assistance Group network for local help worldwide.

Price: Included in membership (per fund). There is no separate signup if your fund is affiliated. Medical limit: not published. Trip length: not published. Area: not published. The conditions depend on each fund, and we did not read them. Mutas does not cover your car or cancellation.

English: No (Dutch/French). If you are a member of Helan or another free mutuality, Mutas does not apply to you: Helan members use Mediphone Assist.

Mutas suits members of the affiliated funds who travel in Europe and want to know what they already have before buying more. For long trips, travel outside Europe, cancellation or luggage, add a travel policy.

4. AXA Assurance Voyage 4.2/10

Ranked 4 of 6 rated providers in this guide.

Best for: Frequent long-stay travellers wanting a Belgian insurer.

AXA Belgium sells annual travel insurance in two formulas under Belgian law. Medical limit: €750,000 (Horizon) / €1,250,000 (Premium). Trip length: 90 days (Horizon) / 180 days (Premium). The Horizon formula also caps the total number of travel days in a year. Area: Europe or World.

The Premium formula covers the deductible on a rental car: Rental-car deductible (Premium). Cancellation: not published on the pages we read. Price: check current price (online calculator / broker). The contract and the insurance certificate arrive by e-mail, and the certificate is also available in the MyAXA client area, useful when a visa or a tour operator asks for proof.

English: No (French/Dutch). AXA suits frequent travellers who take long stays abroad and want a Belgian insurer with high medical limits, and who are comfortable with French or Dutch.

5. Ethias Assistance Car & Family 4.0/10

Ranked 5 of 6 rated providers in this guide.

Best for: Families with a car wanting one assistance contract.

Ethias Assistance Car & Family combines travel assistance for people with breakdown cover for your car. All household members are covered for every trip in the year. Trip length: 90 days. Area: World (persons), Europe (vehicle).

Medical limit: €250,000 / €500,000 (Plus). The base limit is lower than VAB or AXA; the Plus formula raises it and adds dental cover. Medical costs in Belgium are not covered: this is cover for abroad only.

Car assistance: Included, with breakdown and towing in Belgium and all countries of geographic Europe. Cancellation: not published. Price: check current price. English: No (French/Dutch).

Ethias suits families with a car who want one contract for breakdown at home and abroad plus travel assistance. If medical limits matter most, compare with AXA and VAB.

6. Touring 3.4/10

Ranked 6 of 6 rated providers in this guide.

Best for: Drivers who want breakdown and travel cover from one provider.

Touring sells travel insurance as a tied agent of AG Insurance, which carries the risk. It offers full medical travel insurance with repatriation, with or without breakdown cover abroad: Optional (with or without breakdown abroad).

The pages we read did not show prices or limits without going through the online wizard. Price: check current price (online product wizard). Medical limit: not published. Trip length: not published. Cancellation: Separate product. English: No (touring.be/en redirects to French).

Touring suits drivers who already use it for breakdown and want travel cover from the same provider. For a newcomer comparing plans, the lack of published limits and of English pages makes it the hardest to assess.

Situations that change the choice

If you have just arrived

Join a mutuality, ask for your EHIC, and check whether your fund includes assistance abroad. Only then pick a travel plan. Without Belgian health insurance, medical cover on travel plans can be minimal.

If you go home for long summers

Look at the maximum trip length before the price. VAB and AXA Premium cover long trips; Redion Light covers only short ones. If home is outside Europe, you need a worldwide area.

If you travel to the United States or Asia

Choose a plan with worldwide cover and a high medical limit. Check that the area is not Europe-only by default.

If you drive to your holidays

A combined contract, such as Ethias Assistance Car & Family or Touring with breakdown, saves a second policy. VAB also offers car assistance as an option.

If you travel with children

VAB and Ethias cover the household on one contract. With VAB, name every family member and update the contract when your household changes, for example after a birth.

If you have a health condition

Read the pre-existing condition clause. VAB covers unexpected complications of an existing condition but not expected ones. Declare your condition and ask the insurer in writing what is covered.

If you need proof of insurance

For a visa, a school trip or a tour operator, you may need a certificate. AXA makes it available in its client area, and VAB has a travel certificate page. Ask the provider how quickly it issues one.

Step by step: choosing and using annual cover

  1. Check what you have. EHIC from your mutuality, assistance from your fund (Mutas or Mediphone Assist), and any cover from your bank card.
  2. List your trips. Longest single trip, destinations outside Europe, whether you drive.
  3. Compare the limits that matter. Medical limit, maximum trip length, area, car assistance.
  4. Get prices. Redion publishes them; for VAB, AXA, Ethias and Touring use the online wizard or a broker.
  5. Read the exclusions. Pre-existing conditions, sports, and the definition of Europe.
  6. Save the emergency number in your phone and keep the insurance certificate with your documents.
  7. In an emergency, call the assistance line as early as you can, so the insurer can organise care or transport.

You can check any insurer or agent on the FSMA register.

Our verdict

Redion (formerly Europ Assistance Belgium) comes out ahead in the table. For English-speaking residents, Redion is the one to choose: published prices, English pages, and a cheap Light plan for short trips, with Smart for higher limits. VAB is the best choice for families who take long trips in Europe, with high medical cover and long trip lengths on one contract. Mutas is worth checking before you buy anything if your mutuality is affiliated, though it is assistance rather than full insurance. AXA suits long stays with high medical limits, Ethias drivers who want one contract for car and family, and Touring drivers who already use it. Whatever you pick, join a Belgian mutuality first: without it, travel medical cover can shrink to very little.
